We meet on alternate Tuesday afternoons to sing some of the old hymns and listen to some stories from the bible. We are mostly people who cannot make church on a Sunday and enjoy a time of light hearted fellowship together. We have tea, biscuits and a time to chat together afterwards. WESTON ART CLUB NEWS – MAY/JUNE 2010
Apologies for not having produced this sooner, but we have been so absorbed in our art that we didn’t noticed how quickly the weeks have gone by since the last newsletter.
Photographs of the Club’s most recent work will be posted on the WCP (Weston Community Project) website, hopefully before the end of May. But just to recap, we have spent the last couple of months focusing on a variety of techniques and subjects. Most recently we have revisited the art of portraiture, working from photographs of fellow members and using charcoal, pen and pastels. Although not always very flattering, some excellent likenesses were produced.
A number of sessions have also been devoted to painting and drawing from still life. Using Mattisse’s colourful paintings as inspirtation, Art Club members have painted their own homages to the artist. Some of the stunning results will be available for viewing on the website.
Chrissie Borland, our professional tutor from the Mill Arts Centre, led two of our most recent master classes. One showing us how to achieve proportion in portraiture and the other teaching us how to use and recognise tone in painting and drawing. Elke Pollard, a professional artist from Northampton (do take a look at her website), made a return visit to the Club and with her usual vibrancy and enthusiasm, led a session on pen and wash. Elke is currently in the Orkneys tutoring painting holidays, but we hope to have her back for at least one more session before the August break. In the meantime we thought you would like to know what else we have got planned for the next couple of months.
WATERCOLOURS – Tuesday 8th June (7pm to 9pm) – £5 including tea or coffee.
Chrissie is returning to Weston, to teach us more about watercolours. It will be an opportunity to explore and experiment with various watercolour techniques - never the most easy of mediums. Please bring your own brushes and watercolours if you have them. Good quality watercolour paper will be available at cost price.
ABSTRACTION – Tuesday 6th July (7pm to 9pm) - £5 including tea or coffee.
We are pleased to welcome back the artist Kerstin Kappler. Kerstin has agreed to help us to overcome any reservations we may harbour about abstract painting. She will be showing us how to create abstract paintings from conventional source material. We will advise about the materials required nearer the time.
FULL DAY WORKSHOP – Saturday 24th July (10am to 4pm) – cost £22
For the first time the Art Club is planning a full day’s workshop at the Weston Community Project. The session will run from 10am to 4pm. Morning coffee and a light buffet lunch will be included. We are hoping that the day will provide the opportunity to really immerse ourselves in our painting and drawing. A rare treat for most of us who usually have to make do with our two precious hours on a Tuesday evening. The session will be tutored by Chrissie Borland who will guide us through the creative process. The aim will be for us all to produce a finished piece of artwork before the end of the day. Details of the medium and subject matter will be agreed nearer the time. If you would like to join the workshop please let us know by 29th June.
We look forward to seeing you at some or hopefully all of the above!
Kind regards from Irene & Ros

Who wouldn't wish to be in sunny Spain now that winter's here ... ? With airports closed the best we can do is enjoy the liquid sunshine that comes from Spain, and that is precisely what Ian and Edwina invite us to do next Thursday (14th January) at 8 pm. When they planned the event last year, how did they know how timely their theme would be?
Join us and drive away the winter blues at the Weston Community Project. Don't forget to let Ian and Edwina know if you are coming: nsh-weston@tiscali.co.uk . Incidentally, the charge for the event will be around £7 or £8 for members (as usual, £2 more for visitors).
Ole'!
Glyn with seasonal greetings
